People for Peace, Justice and Healing met Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Associated Ministries. Present for check-in were: Sallie S., Mark, Terry, Rob, Sally M., Kyle, Sheila, Nancy, and Sol.

AGENDA

1. GREATER TACOMA PEACE PRIZE (Nancy)
Discussion of the award of the Greater Tacoma Peace Prize to David Alger.

2. ASSOCIATED MINISTRIES AUCTION ITEMS (Sallie S.)
Items or collections of items for the May 30 Associated Ministries auction are wanted! Call Sallie at 383-3056 ext.105. Any item of quality that could sell for $20 or more is appropriate. Other possible donations: services, vacation rentals, etc. Needed by the end of the month. (Actually this was discussed at PPJH's Apr. 11 meeting, but somehow I seem never to have got around to posting those minutes.)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. POTLUCK DINNER & DISCUSSION OF AFGHANISTAN (Terry)
Following up on the recent series of documentary films on Afghanistan cosponsored by United for Peace of Pierce County and the Micah Project of First United Methodist Church of Tacoma, a potluck dinner and discussion of the U.S. role in Afghanistan will be held Saturday evening, April 18, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, 621 Tacoma Ave. South.

2. PIERCE COUNTY FOR CHANGE (Sally M.)
Pierce County for Change, an Obama-inspired group, will meet at the Center for Spiritual Living, 206 N. "J" St., on Sun., Apr. 19, at 3:00 p.m. The group is dedicated to service to the community and issue advocacy.

3. DIGGING DEEPER LXXIX ON THE POLITICS OF ASSASSINATION (Mark)
On Mon., Apr. 13 & 20, at 7:00 p.m., United for Peace of Pierce County's study circle, Digging Deeper, is examining a recent book on the JFK assassination, James W. Douglass's JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters (Orbis, 2008), and William F. Pepper's An Act of State: The Execution of Martin Luther King (Pluto, 2003; updated paperback 2008).

4. PERMACULTURE BUS (Sol)
Sustainable Tacoma Pierce (STP) has sponsored the PermiBus's coming to Tacoma. An event held Apr. 16 at the Center for Spiritual Living (CSL) was a great hit with 37 people of all walks and ages in attendance (even with several big events happening at the same time). Feast, fun and education was had by all, especially the little ones with the chickens and seed ball workshop. The Permibus will be returning to our area in late June and STP will be hosting several events while they're here -- one at CSL, one focussed on marginalized youth, and another co-sponsored by MetroParks at a park location. Check out the PermiBus at www.permibus.org.

Respectfully submitted,
Mark
