August 23, 2003

Tacoma PJH met Saturday, August 23, 2003 at Associated Ministries, at 10:00 a.m. Present for check-in following a rather lengthy discussion about just about everything were: Sallie, Kent, Mark J., Karen H., Susan, Sheila, and Rob.

AGENDA:

MARILYN: Karen reported that Marilyn is still at St. Clare's following a gall bladder operation. Her hand and right arm were injured during surgery prep and she will in the hospital for an indeterminate time.

BILL OF RIGHTS: Discussion of 34 speakers who spoke to the Bill of Rights Resolution sponsored by Councilman Evans (and Tim Smith) and presented last Tuesday to the Council. The Resolution will again come up for a vote this coming Tuesday 8/26. No comments from the public will be allowed but members are encouraged to attend and support the resolution and to write to their council persons and mayor urging their support - especially Miller and Landenburg whose votes are needed to pass the resoltion. Also thank Moss, Baarsma, Evans and McGavick for their support.

VOICES IN THE WILDERNESS: This national organization will be in our area in October. Discussion about whether we want to sponsor a local event. Problem with conflicting with Earth Charter Summit. (They will be in Washington October 7-18 and at Evergreen on the 9th.) Information about the group at www.wheelsofjustice.org This group is being sued by the Justice Dept. for delivering medical supplies to Iraq. Mark J., Sallie and Adam Bray have further information about the group.

EARTH CHARTER SUMMIT: Sheila expresses enthusiasm for group - feels they are coming together. She has made a deal with Kinko's who will help with printing needs. An Earth Charter webcast will be broadcast from the East Coast during Summit day and will start at 9 a.m. here. There are plans to project the webcast on a large screen in the sanctuary at United Meth. during the day. Sheila still in negotiations with the men of Unitarian Church to cook for us. A librarian in Lakewood has been delegated leader of the children's track. Sheila is looking for college students to serve as ushers, time keepers and recorders for various breakout groups. After the lst meeting in September, Sept. 4th, the group will be meeting once a week, upstairs at Tulley's on Broadway at 6:30.

Discussion: Sallie in discussion with Duane (Niatum) expressed concern about public relations needs...getting the word out to the public. They need a person who can do this. Karen recommended Laura Karlin and will call her. (Laura is interested.) SOA planning meeting for 11/16 event is on October 11 - Earth Summit Day.

SOA: Discussion of the meaning of our co-sponsorship of 11/16 event. Discussion of our need to discuss financial expectations of groups who want our sponsorship. Sallie will check our budget.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

TIM SMITH AT HILLSIDE: 1 p.m.Sunday, 8/25 to discuss Bill of Rights Resolution

SUMMIT CHARTER MEETING: Tulley's on B'way, 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, 8/26.

SPEAKERS FOR HILLSIDE: Kent is looking for speakers/experts on the peace movement and related subjects of spirituality, and non-violence and the relationship between social needs and peace.

HOWARD DEAN: Will be in Seattle, WestLake Center, today at 4 p.m.
