AGENDA

1. Trip to Italy (Sheila)
Extraordinary photos from the recent trip to Italy of Sheila and Kyle.

2. Palestine (Nancy)
The situation in Gaza is dire. Discussion of the development of public opinion in the U.S., locally, and in the American Jewish community. Nancy is selling bottles of Palestinian Canaan organic Fair Trade olive oil, a perfect present to give at any time of year. Please contact Nancy at nfarrellvt@yahoo.com or 253-952-0571. 3. NWDC vigil (Nancy)
Many groups are involved in calling attention to the scandal of the Northwest Detention Center. Colleen recommends reading the 35-page report (or at least the three page summary at the beginning of the document) of Dora B. Schriro, the secretary of homeland security, released earlier this month, entitled "Immigration and Detention Overview and Recommendations."

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. DIA DE LOS MUERTOS -- TACOMA ART MUSEUM (Nancy)
For the fifth year in a row the Tacoma Art Museum is partnering with Centro Latino in celebrating Día de los Muertos, from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2009. This powerful, symbolic celebration honoring loved ones who have passed away combines ancient and New World traditions and folk customs. Día de los Muertos will be observed at Tacoma Art Museum beginning Saturday, October 17, with the installation of community altars and a large tapete and will conclude on Sunday, November 1, with a free community festival.

2. PIERCE COUNTY ACLU CHAPTER (Colleen)
The November meeting of the Pierce County Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union will be held on Wed., Nov. 4, at 7:00 p.m., at King's Books in Tacoma. The topic: Civil liberties victories in Washington State in 2009. Speaking will be Pat Gallagher and Lizel Rebugio.

3. DIGGING DEEPER (Mark)
UFPPC's book discussion group, Digging Deeper, will discuss George Friedman's The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century (2009), on Mon., Oct. 26, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Mandolin Cafe, 3923 S. 12th St., Tacoma, WA.

4. RAY McGOVERN (Mark)
The 27-year CIA veteran and prominent critic of U.S. foreign policy will speak at UW Tacoma (Carwein Auditorium) on Sun., Nov. 15, at 7:00 p.m.

SOUTH SOUND INTERFAITH CAMP FUNDRAISER WITH TOM RAWSON (Mark)
Tom Rawson will perfom a benefit concert at the Antique Sandwich Company on Sat., Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Have fun and support a good cause!
