Meeting Notes for People for Peace, Justice, and Healing

People for Peace, Justice and Healing met Saturday, May 7, 2005 at Associated Ministries. Present for check-in were Mark, Sally, Sheila and Kyle, Colleen, Louisa, Karen and Karen. It was discussed and then determined that Sallie was at Ground Zero for Mother's Day action. Further general discussion.

AGENDA:

CONVERSATION CAFE
Question for coming week: (I kid you not.) Which do you choose - Truth or Beauty?

COUNTER RECRUITMENT: Mark
Mark reported that members of the committee are encouraged by developments - they are collecting good materials and making contacts. Mark complimented for handsome picture in paper. Mark reported on action at Foss when principal cancelled activity because, according to principal, proper procedures hadn't been followed, although one teacher had made four attempts to get event on the calendar. Discussion ongoing in CR group about style and tactics. Mark reported on his conversation with JrROTC recruitment...er..non-recruitment officer. One of the major goals of CR at this time is to get the information out that parents have a right to ask their children's school not to give their child's name, address, et al to the military. They must ask, however, or the information will go automatically to the military under No Child Left Behind Act. ACLU through Colleen is monitoring events to see that civil rights of students aren't appropriated. Mark said Sallie is anxious that tensions don't escalate. There will be an event May 18 at Associated Ministries. Details to follow.

NO ROADS: Karen K
Karen asked that people email Gregoire in support of her attempt to stop legislation that would open up Federal and State forest lands to roads. Louisa said she would try to get us a hyperlink to Gregoire's office.

FILM -- POWER OF NIGHTMARES: Mark
Mark recommends that we see (or show) this three-hour film. Discussion of a "movie day" or a way to show this film at one of our regularly scheduled meetings or for a larger group at a larger venue.
