5. CATERPILLAR PROTEST IN OLYMPIA -- FRI., OCT. 19 (Nancy)
On Fri., Oct 19, a protest has been called in Olympia as part of the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation's National Day of Action against Caterpillar to demand that it stop profiting from Israel's human rights violations of Palestinians. The Rachel Corrie Foundation will join the weekly Fellowship of Reconciliation Peace Vigil on the Corner of 4th Avenue and Water Street to call for Caterpillar to stop profiting from Israel’s human rights violations of Palestinians and to recognize the one month anniversary of the death of Mahmoud al-Kifafi at the hands of the Israeli Military. This day marks the eve of the one month anniversary of Israel's killing of Mahmoud al-Kifafi. According to the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, Mahmoud al-Kifafi, aged 19, was killed by the Israeli army with a CAT bulldozer in the Gaza Strip on September 20. He is at least the 18th person to have been killed by the Israeli army with a CAT bulldozer . It's up to us to demand accountability from CAT and from our government. -- NOTE: On Sept. 16, 2007, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit dismissed a lawsuit charging that Caterpillar bulldozers aided killing and torture in the Palestinian territories, affirming a district court ruling. "It is not the role of the courts to indirectly indict Israel for violating international law with military equipment the United States government provided and continues to provide," Circuit Judge Kim Wardlaw wrote for a three-judge panel. "The executive branch has made a policy determination that Israel should purchase Caterpillar bulldozers," the decision said. "A court could not find in favor of the plaintiffs without implicitly questioning, and even condemning, United States foreign policy toward Israel."
